Therapy scheduled by another county health authority

Applies only in Sweden!

In certain cases of scheduled therapy you must contact your local county health authority to obtain confirmation that the health authority will pay for your therapy. Below are different alternatives for receiving the therapy you have chosen.

Own initiative

You choose to receive therapy as an outpatient in a different district. You then contact the clinic in the district you want to receive therapy in on your own initiative.

When you contact the clinic you need to confirm that:

– the clinic can accept you. The clinic may have a waiting list and the local patients have priority.

– the clinic has an agreement with its local county health authority, i.e. your therapy will be paid for by the county health care authority in question.

You cover the costs of travel and accommodation yourself.

Specialist referral

A specialist referral applies when your own local county health authority cannot offer the therapy you need. (Stockholm is shown as an example):

You have good reasons for receiving therapy in another district. You may for example have children or another relative living in that district who can help you when you undergo therapy.

A referral for specialist therapy in another county should in the first hand be issued by a director of operations.

Where your therapy will take place is decided in consultation with your specialist physician. The Stockholm County Council pay for your therapy, travel and accommodation. Discuss this with your specialist physician.
