There are medications that reduce the size of the prostate gradually and help alleviate the problem. Medications reduce the symptoms, but in many cases the effects are only temporary. Some patients notice an improvement, while some notice only slight effects or no effects at all.
Advantages
- Immediately available
- Alpha-blocker treatment gives immediate effects.
- Symptoms may go away, take longer to appear or become milder while waiting for an active treatment (surgical operation or CoreTherm® therapy).
- Sexual function is normally retained = erection.
- Transurethral ejaculation is maintained.
Disadvantages
- Only treating the symptoms but does not cure them. Medication may result in a curable problem becoming a chronic disease.
- Not sufficient when problem is moderate or severe, which means that the symptoms persist despite medication.
- Effects are temporary – BPH develops progressively.
- Side effects are common – dizziness, fatigue, headaches and impotence.
Side effects that can occur during treatment:
- Headache and dizziness
– Fatigue
– Nausea
– Impotence
