Therapy using CoreTherm®

Individualised therapy

The monitoring of important treatment indicators and the regulation of the microwave power used means that the therapy can be adapted to the needs of each individual and never continue longer than necessary. One of the greatest advantages of CoreTherm® is that the treating physician can follow how the patient responds to the treatment and can adjust the microwave power accordingly.

The optimal treatment duration and dose depends on the composition of the prostate and the blood flow through the tissues, which can vary significantly from patient to patient. By monitoring important indicators – intraprostatic temperature, intraprostatic blood flow and the estimated amount of cell kill – CoreTherm® therapy can be adjusted to the needs of the individual so that the treatment never continues longer than is necessary to achieve the treatment goal.

Intraprostatic temperature monitoring is the key to controlling the therapy as this provides an indication of the internal blood flow in the prostate. Blood flow increases as the tissue temperature rises. The treating physician can follow the intraprostatic temperature on a computer screen throughout the procedure. The blood flow in the prostate is also calculated and shown continuously.

The continuous monitoring of the temperature in the prostate also enables CoreTherm® to assess and display the degree of cell kill during the treatment.

An effective and safer alternative

Research has shown that CoreTherm® is as effective as surgery. It is also safer. Scientific studies have demonstrated that CoreTherm® therapy gives good results for more than 80% of the patients treated. Results from three prospective clinical studies show excellent treatment results following CoreTherm®. Urine flow increased by as much as 109%.

In a comprehensive FDA controlled study where CoreTherm® was compared to surgery, no statistically significant differences were found between the treatments in terms of urine flow or assessment of symptoms. More than 80% of the treatments were successful. CoreTherm® therapy however has a lower risk for complications. The same study found a complication frequency of 17% for the surgery group compared to 2% for the CoreTherm® group.

Preferred by patients

When BPH treatment procedures and the results that can be expected are compared it is easy to see why the majority prefer CoreTherm® to TURP. Surgery frightens many patients and CoreTherm® offers an alternative that is as effective and more convenient.

CoreTherm® offers patients better prospects from the day of therapy and onwards. It is a treatment that is easy to perform and for the patient to tolerate. CoreTherm® can be administered at an out patient surgery and the patient can go home soon after the procedure. The risks of serious side effects are low and CoreTherm® is successful in more than 80% of cases.
